Wayne Knoll, of De Pere, WI, departed this life peacefully at Unity Hospice (Meng Residence) on 1/16/2020 just days shy of his 86th birthday. Wayne was born 1/22/1934 in Omro, WI to the late Jess & Mary (Bitter) Knoll. He earned his Bachelors (1956) and Masters (1966) degrees from UW-Oshkosh. On 9/27/1980, he married Nadine Layden (Menges). He taught English at Shiocton High School before becoming a guidance counselor at Franklin Jr. High/Middle School in Green Bay. After retirement, he and Nadine enjoyed many snow-free winters in Florida.
Wayne loved interacting with his grandchildren (especially correcting their grammar), golfing, having lunch with his buddies, playing Sheepshead (but not "Spitz High"), reading, and watching golf tournaments and Packer games. (He'll be putting in a good word with the "Big Guy" for a Super Bowl appearance in a couple weeks!) He will be best remembered by all he encountered for his unique sense of humor and for being the most lovable curmudgeon around… he loved to make people laugh.
He is survived by his wife, Nadine, children: Cheryl (Layden) Moss & Randy, Lisa (Layden) DeBeck and John Layden, grandchildren: Brian & David Moss, Kathryn (Moss) Jerdee & Ben, Elisabeth (DeBeck) Portz & Jared, John Reed Layden, Garrett & Ryan Menges and Lauryn Hibbard and great-grandchildren: Evelyn Jerdee, Mara & Thea Portz, Ayden & Cody Menges and Azzayha & Darryen Menges. He is also survived by nephews & nieces, David & Christine, Chris & Denise and Doug & Mary Knoll, Karen (Ickstadt) Murray, Jeff & Andi and Ross & Tressa Meyer. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Gregory Knoll, his brother, Keith Knoll and his nephew, Mark Ickstadt.
Wayne's family is grateful to his doctors and the staffs at St. Mary's and St. Vincent's Hospitals, the DaVita Green Bay Dialysis Center and Unity Hospice for the care they provided to Wayne over the years and especially during the last leg of his earthly journey.
Visitation will be at Bethel Lutheran Church, 1350 Bond St in Green Bay from 5-7 pm on Wed, 1/22/2020 and Thurs 9:30 am followed by a memorial service at 11 am.
