Virginia Jeanette (Jinny) Lukas, passed away in her sleep and on her own terms, Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
She was born May 15, 1924, in Wilton, WI, to the late James P. and Ida (Janke) McCann.
Jinny was a longtime member of St John the Evangelist Parish. She enjoyed a successful career in teaching after she graduated from the La Crosse State Teachers College in 1945. She taught for many years in Sheboygan and Green Bay before retiring in 1985. They spent some of their retirement in Rohnert Park, CA with family before relocating permanently back to Green Bay. Jinny spent much of her retirement volunteering and was known for her gentle strength as well as her kind heart and spirit. She spent time volunteering for the St. Vincent De Paul Store in many capacities, the St. John's Homeless Shelter, the Hazelwood Historical Society, and was an usher for the St. Norbert's Theatrical Productions for many years. She had numerous ties within the community to include her connections with the Wisconsin Teacher's Association, her ties with numerous nursing homes made over the years through both friends and family through the church. Her outreach through her volunteer efforts touched many in her life.
Jinny was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Tom, and her son Christopher. She is survived by her daughter Diane, her grandson Rob, and her son, John. She is also survived by her great nephews Paul, Gene, and Dennis McCann. Surviving cousins include, Len & Anne Fabos and their son Todd, Greg & Kathy Fabos, Jay, Mike, Larry, Kelly, Tim, and Lee McCann, Mary Ellen Diebel, Jim Smith, Sue Anne Buick, and Marge Polek.
Family and friends may call Saturday, July 7th, 2012 at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 413 St. John St., Green Bay, from 10:00am to 11:00am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's on Saturday, at 11:00am with Rev. Brian Belongia officiating. Burial will be Monday, July 9th, in La Crosse, WI at Catholic Cemetery, which is located at 519 Losey Blvd. S.
She has touched many lives and will be missed by all. Green Bay lost one of its great citizens this week.
