Virginia Ann Schmelter, 82, De Pere, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side, Monday, April 22, 2013. She was born August 23, 1930 to the late Henry and Sadie (Saenger) Wagner. Virginia proudly served her country in the Women's Army Corps (WAC) from 1949 until 1954. She was a Sargent and served as an operating room technician during the war. For part of her service she was stationed in Japan. Upon her release she received the Korean Service medal, UN Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Nat'l Defense Service Medal.
She married William "Bill" Schmelter on October 1, 1954. They had six children and celebrated 46 years together before Bill passed away on May 15, 2001. Virginia loved flower gardening and her beagles, Barney, Charlie, Nellie, and Peter.
Virginia is survived her children and grandchildren, Debra (Michael) Hansford and their children, Kimberly and Kristopher; Diana (Richard) Buss and their children, Christina (Paul) Tilque, Matthew and Corey Buss; Michael Schmelter and friend, Chris; Laurie (Bill) Johnson; Lisa (Marty) Hermans; Amy (Doug) Wilmet; great-granddaughter Lillie Anna Tilque; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Seroogy and Nancy Titel and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Franklin (Ruby) and Warren (Norma) Wagner and their daughter, Susie; sisters, Roma (Marvin) Schneider and Bonnie (Bill) Wellens; brothers-in-law, Robert Schmelter and Marvin Seroogy; and sister-in-law, Betty (Floyd) Doering.
Family and friends may call Friday, April 26, 2013 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S. Monroe Ave. Green Bay, from 4:00pm until 7:00pm. A funeral service will be celebrated at the funeral home on Friday at 7:00pm with Pastor Greg Watling officiating. Entombment will be in Fort Howard Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for First Congregational United Church of Christ, New London and The Green Bay Humane Society.
