Veronica Ann Gatens, age 85, of Green Bay, passed away peacefully, Sunday, December 22, 2019 with her son at her side. She was born September 4, 1934 in Mason City, IA, daughter of the late Charles and Elizabeth Foldesi.
Veronica graduated from Holy Family High School, Mason City, IA. Veronica moved to Chicago with her older sister where she worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. While in Chicago, Veronica met Melvin Gatens. Veronica and Melvin were married, June 6, 1959 at Holy Family Church, Mason City, IA and the couple shared over 40 loving years of marriage before Melvin preceded her in death in 2001.
Veronica and Melvin welcomed a son, Kevin, in 1960. Kevin was her pride and joy. Veronica was also employed part-time at Prange's for many years. She loved her job at Prange's and the people she worked with. Veronica enjoyed traveling with her family and was an avid reader. She was also a talented cook and spent countless hours in the kitchen cooking for her friends and family. She was a very active member of St. Agnes Parish, Green Bay. First and foremost, Veronica was a devoted wife and loving mother. She had a kind and compassionate heart and passed her strong morals on to her son.
Veronica is survived by her son, Kevin (fiance, Mary Baez) Gatens and 3 sisters: Mary McEvilly, Margaret Whitzel and Barbara Peterson. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin and a brother, Karl Foldesi.
Visitation will be held at St. Agnes Parish (1484 9th St., Green Bay) Friday, January 3, 2020 from 9 to 11 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM with Fr. Patrick Beno, celebrant.
