Thomas John Smits passed away peacefully at home July 1, 2021. He was born on December 13, 1941 to the late George and Bernice (Sager) Smits.
Thomas worked for 10 years at American Can Company in Green Bay before moving on and starting Badger State Security Systems in 1977, installing security systems in homes and businesses around Wisconsin. He then acquired Club 22 Supper Club in Shawano in 1989, followed by Wisconsin Furniture Mart in 1990. Club 22 Supper Club is still thriving today.
Thomas was involved deeply in his parish, St. Joseph's in Oneida, where he helped with spaghetti dinners, ushering, distributing communion and ran an annual parish golf outing. He also was the parish council president for several years. Tom married his wife Mary in 1973. Together they have two sons: Matthew and Andrew.
Tom was an avid golfer. He enjoyed fishing and hunting as well. Spending time with his family was important to him.
Tom is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary; two sons: Matthew Smits and Andrew (Lorie) Smits; two grandchildren: Madyson Van Ark and newborn baby Charles Smits; brothers Jim (Rose) Smits and Jack (Kathy) Smits; sister Mary Lou (Arnie) Kelnhofer; brother-in-law Lyle Speerschneider along with many nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his brother Dick Smits and his sisters Janet Speerschneider and Gayle Scott.
Visitation for Tom will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at Newcomer- Green Bay Chapel (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay, WI, 54301) from 5:00PM - 7:00PM. A Vigil Service will follow at 7:00PM. Visitation will continue on Thursday, July 8, 2021 at St. Joseph's Parish (145 St. Joseph's Dr., Hobart, WI 54155) from 9:00AM - 11:00AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00AM.
