Sister Mary Bede (Agnes) Piotrowski, 90, was born April 23, 1922 in Plover, Wisconsin t Gertrude (Sankey) and Leo Piotrowski. Sister Mary Bede entered the Community of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, Bay Settlement, in September 1940. She was received into the Order in August 1941 and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 2001.
After obtaining her bachelor degree, Sister Mary Bede pursued graduate studies in home economics at Stout State University and Viterbo University. Sister Mary Bede served 45 years as an educator, teaching at both elementary and secondary schools in the Green Bay Diocese, Texas, North Dakota and Alabama. She retired from teaching in 1989. A longtime advocate for the poor, Sister Mary Bede opened the Poverello Gift Shop in Egg Harbor which she operated for ten years. Proceeds from the gift shop were donated to the poor in Appalachia and Dominican Republic. Sister Mary Bede resided at the Motherhouse continuing to make craft items for the poor and annual Sisters' Bazaar.
Sister Mary Bede is survived by her sisters, Lillian Walker, Miami, Florida; Sister, Romana Piotrowski, Tuscon, Arizona; and Mary Ann Wrycza, Appleton, and by the members and Associates of her Community, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Tecla and Alice and brothers, Chester, Larry and Melvin.
Sister will be remembered for her love of community, the poor and those in need, sewing/crafts especially Raggedy Ann dolls, teaching home economics and her gift of storytelling.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Friday, April 12, 2013 at St. Francis Convent, 3110 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay, with Rev. Msgr. John De Wane presiding. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
