Sandra Jean Smits, age 82, a lifelong resident of Green Bay, WI, passed away peacefully at her home, Monday, December 9, 2024, surrounded by her beloved family. She was born January 25, 1942 in Green Bay, daughter of the late Earl and Elizabeth "Betty" (Jaegers) Taylor and was a graduate of Green Bay West High School.
Sandra married the love of her life, Thomas "Tom" Smits, May 18, 1963 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. They shared 42 blessed years of marriage before Tom passed away in 2004.
Sandra's family was her greatest pride and joy. She fully embraced the roles of wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, forming unique and special bonds with all of her family members. Her selfless nature welcomed so many to confide in her and become part of her "adopted" family. She always considered the needs of others before her own. Helping others brought her so much joy and she often volunteered her time at the NEW Community Shelter and The Salvation Army. Her faith was very important to her and she was an active member of many area Catholic parishes in her lifetime.
Sandra is survived by her daughters, Sherrie (Michael) Schoen and Kim (Jim) Appleton; 6 grandchildren: Devin (Tony Hockers) and Heather (Riley McElmurry) Schoen, Mason (Sydney) Appleton, Gabby (Jack) Wied, Nolan and Ireana Appleton; 3 great-grandchildren: Emmett and Elaine McElmurry and TJ Appleton and siblings, Marcia (Fred) Ammermann and Todd Taylor. She is further survived by sisters-in-law, Mary Kay Gabriel and Nancy (Blaine) Hintz; best friend, Joan Leitner; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom; brother, Pat Taylor; sister and brothers-in-law: Bonnie (Mike) Brosteau and Chuck Gabriel.
A private memorial Mass will be celebrated by Sandra's family. She will be laid to rest with her husband, Tom, at Allouez Catholic Chapel Mausoleum. To leave an online condolence for the family, please visit www.NewcomerGreen Bay.com.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Sandra's name.
