Royce Austin Johnson, age 92, peacefully departed this world on August 25, 2020 to meet with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The son of Austin and Ann Johnson, Royce was born in Whitewater, Wisconsin on January 7th, 1928. He had 4 siblings, Shirley, Robert, Audrey and Betty. He grew up in Whitewater, graduated from Whitewater High School, and lived there until he entered the Army in 1946. He shared many stories about his Army days, as he was a clerk for a General at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
After returning to Whitewater after his service he met and married Georgette C. Walther, a student at UW-Whitewater, and they married in 1952. They had four children, Kim (Judith), Pam (fiancé James), Kevin (Susan) and Kirk (Kelly), all but Kelly surviving his passing and currently residing in the Appleton and Sheboygan areas. Georgette preceded him in death on July 15, 2012. Royce is additionally survived by seven grandchildren, Kyle, Kelsey, Adam, Jonathan, Shanna, Austin and Stacey and ten great grandchildren.
He started his career working for several large companies such as Sinclair, Chevron and Ortho, either in clerical work or sales. In 1968, he took a leap of faith and decided to become a home builder. He built hundreds of houses in the Manitowoc and Sheboygan areas before retiring in the 1980s.
His career and retirement were filled with travel and new houses. Royce and Georgette lived throughout Wisconsin in Green Lake, Kenosha, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Fence, and Appleton, as well as Winterhaven, FL and Sun City West, AZ. They returned to Appleton in the early 2000s.
Royce's favorite hobby was flying. He loved to get up early and take off by himself and fly all over Wisconsin. He was a private pilot for many years and an avid member of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). He spent lots of time at EAA parking airplanes and meeting fellow pilots. He owned and restored several aircraft and was proud to show off his work to other pilots and friends. Ironically, he also loved fly fishing.
Due to COVID-19, the family had a private graveside service in Sturgeon Bay on September 11, 2020 at Bayside Cemetery, where Royce was interred with Georgette for eternity. They are both dearly missed.
