Richard "Dick" J. Mertens, age 78, of Green Bay, passed away Friday, March 3, 2017 with his loving family at his side. He was born December 4, 1938 in Green Bay, son of the late George and Rosella (Hayes) Mertens and attended Green Bay West High School.

Dick began working for Gold Bond Ice Cream Company when he was 15 and retired after over 40 years of service. He was a well respected employee and coworker, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his job. Dick was an integral part of setting up new plants for the company and spent a significant amount of time traveling for part of his career.

Dick married Elaine Hazaert, May 18, 1957 and they shared 17 years of marriage and were blessed with 2 children, Mark and Jenni. He married Karen (Klein) O' Leary, June 21, 1980 and they were married for 37 blessed years. Dick and Karen enjoyed spending time together at their cottage in Athelstane, at their home in Howard and at Friday night fish fries.

He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bird and deer hunting. Dick was a lifetime member of the NRA and a passionate gun owner and collector. He enjoyed sports cars, motorcycles and cheering on the Packers and the Brewers. First and foremost, Dick was a loving husband and proud father and grandfather. His wise counsel, loving heart and sense of humor will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Dick is survived by his wife, Karen; his children, Mark (Deborah) Mertens and Jenni (Wayne) Willems; 5 grandchildren: Christine and Emilie Mertens, Joelle (Matt) Lohr and Jaime and Julia Willems; former wife, Elaine Boehnlein; father and mother-in-law, Don and Ruth Klein; sisters-in-law: Joan (Michael) DeWindt, Janet (Ray) Baker and Mary Baez; brother-in-law, Alan Klein and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Mertens and a sister, Rosemary (Glen) Schmidt.

Visitation will be held at NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay), Monday, March 6, 2017 from 3 to 6:45 PM. A funeral service will follow at 7 PM. Entombment will be in Fort Howard Memorial Park. To leave an online condolence or special memory for the family, please click on the icon above.
