Richard E. "Dick" LaPlant, age 89, a lifelong resident of Green Bay, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 16, 2024 at the Unity Hospice/Meng Residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 20. 1934 in Green Bay, son of the late Ralph and Lorraine (O'Neil) LaPlant and was graduate of Green Bay East High School.
Dick married the former Sheila Saylor, November 8, 1958 and they shared 42 years before she passed away, January 17, 2003. He proudly served his country in the US Army National Guard. Richard worked as a purchasing clerk for Green Bay and Western Railroad for his entire career, retiring at the age of 60. In his retirement he had many odd jobs including shuttling cars for Enterprise and crossing guard for the Ashwaubenon School District. His volunteer time was spent as a conductor for the National Railroad Museum.
Dick devoted endless hours researching and learning about the Popes throughout history. If you said Dick loved beer, that doesn't even begin to describe his passion. When he was 9 years old, he stopped after school every day, along with his brother, to Rahr's Brewery, where his mother worked and filled up his tin cup with his daily draught. He also enjoyed new cars, his favorite being his Cadillac hard top. Dick fully embraced his role as a grandpa and enjoyed shuttling his grandkids around to their activities and events.
Richard is survived by his children: Sarah LaPlant, Green Bay, Gregg (Diane) LaPlant, Oshkosh, Lynn (Jeff Rosner) Erickson, Green Bay and Dawn (Howie) Schroeder, Green Bay; 4 grandchildren: Robbie and Jennifer Erickson and Katy and Evan (Emily) LaPlant and a brother, Robert (Ann) LaPlant. He is further survived by former son-in-law, Mike Erickson, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sheila, his son, Brian and his sister, Rosemary (Francis) Renard.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer-Green Bay Chapel (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay), Friday, April 5, 2024 from 4 to 6 PM. A memorial service will follow at 6 PM. A Celebration of Dick's life will be held by his family at a later date.
Dick's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Unity Hospice/Meng Residence for their outstanding care, support and compassion.
