Richard John Gay, 97, Allouez, passed away surrounded by his family Wednesday, October 26th, 2022. He was born in Green Bay on June 5th, 1925, to Wilfred and Martha (Gamalski) Gay.
In 1943, Richard enlisted in the Marine Corps at the age of 17. He was in the 4th Marine Division and served in many campaigns in the South Pacific, including the landing on Iwo Jima in February 1945. Richard was honorably discharged in November 1945.
On June 28th, 1947 Richard married Loraine Van Erem, and they spent 75 wonderful years together raising their family.
Richard went to work for Hoberg Paper in 1946. He was there when the mill became Charmin Paper and eventually Proctor & Gamble Company. Richard started in an entry level position. Through his career at the mill, he managed the safety department and before retirement became a member of the purchasing department at Proctor & Gamble. He retired in 1987 having worked 41 years with the same company.
Richard was very active throughout his life, volunteering with the Boy Scouts, Youth Hockey, and the Allouez Park Department. Richard played hockey for many years ending with a Men's Huff & Puff League at the age of 65. Later Richard and Loraine became Snowbirds and spent their winters in Destin, Florida, where they made many friends who they always stayed close to.
Richard is survived by his wife, Loraine; his children, David (Terri) Gay and Jeff Gay; his grandchildren: Joshua Mitchell, Martina (Brian) O'Reilly, Chelsea (John) O'Reilly, Daniel Gay, and Zoe Gay; his great-grandchildren: Emalia Mitchell, Javier Nisthal, and Aidan O'Reilly; brothers, Ron (Barb) Gay, and Jim Gay, and sister, Mary Jo Francois.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jean Ann Gay; brothers: Thomas Gay, Wilfred Gay Jr., Charles Gay, Wayne Gay, and Glen Gay.
Friends and family may call at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, & Receptions (340 S. Monroe Ave, Green Bay, WI) on Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 11:30 am - 1:30 pm with a service to follow at 1:30 pm. Entombment will be private family only.
