Richard C. Basten (Retired Captain GBFD), 80, of Sun Lakes, AZ and formerly of Suring, WI, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ.
Dick was born on August 31, 1935 in Green Bay, son of the late Peter and Evelyn (Martin) Basten. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1953. Richard is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard from 1953-1957. Dick was a Captain on the Green Bay Fire Department until his retirement in 1989. He also drove Truck part time for many years for Fort Howard, Kimberly Clark, Gold Bond Ice Cream. He enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, and woodworking. He especially enjoyed the camping weekends at the family home in Suring with family and friends. Dick and his wife Pat enjoyed traveling during their retirement until her passing in 2010. Dick moved to Arizona in 2015 to enjoy the sunshine and never wanted to see a snowflake again!
Dick is survived by his daughter, Terri (Jeff Wolfe) Basten, and a son, Douglas Basten. He also leaves his grandsons: Phillip Paluch and Chris and Cory Basten, in addition to his sister Doris Hellem, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Dick is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia (Guth) Basten, nephew, Richard Hellem, and brother-in-law Charles Hellem.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 17th from 1 - 4 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S. Monroe Avenue, Green Bay. A memorial service will follow at 4 PM in the funeral home. Entombment will be private in the Good Shepherd Mausoleum at Nicolet Memorial Gardens. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to his nephew, Chris Hellem, neighbors, Dwight and Denise Weller for always being there and helping him when needed.
