Philip W. Thelen, age 82, of Hobart, passed away, Sunday, June 3, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 16, 1936 in Green Bay, WI to Clayton and Grace (Kahl) Thelen. Phil graduated in 1950 from St. Francis Xavier Cathedral Grade School and Green Bay East High School with the class of 1954. He served in the Army reserve in Green Bay from 1955 to 1960.
Phil was a corrections officer at the WI State Reformatory from 1963-1966. He married Janice Eckstein, June 15, 1968 on the St. Norbert College campus. Phil and Janice were married almost 50 years and were blessed with a daughter, Heather. He worked as a sales representative for Gerber Products from 1966 until he retired 32 years later in 1998. He also worked for Source Interlink as a part-time magazine merchandiser from 1999 to 2014.
Phil was a lifetime Packer fan and was in attendance at the 1967 Ice Bowl. He attended almost every practice and made many friends by sharing his wealth of knowledge of Packer stats and history. He was a friendly man who met and loved people everywhere he went. His greatest joys were his family, friends and career. Phil always looked forward to his grandson's activities and spent time with them whenever possible. He will be dearly missed.
Phil is survived by his wife of 49 years, Janice; his daughter, Heather Hultman; grandsons, Aaron and Austin; a brother, Curt (Lynn Matzke) Thelen; sisters-in-law: Linda Thelen, Hope Mercier, Faith (Merton) Arntsen and June (Tony) Treml and special friend, Joe Kunesh.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, James Thelen; father and mother-in-law, Samuel and Gertrude Eckstein and sister-in-law, Joyce (Ben) Blodgett.
Visitation will be held at Visible Church (2450 Velp Ave. Stes 104-106, Green Bay), Friday, June 8, 2018 from 9 to 11 AM. A memorial service will follow at 11 AM with Rev. Ben Lamb officiating.
