Peter G. Hoeffel, age 53, of Milwaukee, passed away December 19, 2023 at his home; ending an 8 month battle with colon cancer.
Peter was born May 28, 1970 in Green Bay to George and Peggy Hoeffel. In his youth, Peter was a phenomenal skateboarder and an avid BMXer. He excelled at everything and was fearless his entire life. He was a punk rocker and attended local punk shows.
Peter graduated from Green Bay East High in 1988. He earned his Philosophy Degree from U.W. - Milwaukee. Peter remained in Milwaukee and lived in the River West neighborhood. He was an important contributor to the community he loved; recently holding bicycle bonanzas in his backyard.
While putting his Philosophy Degree to good use at What's Fresh Deli, Peter learned of and was accepted into the Public Allies Program. During his enriching work with Public Allies, Peter served at Legal Action of Wisconsin. Peter was very proud of his success in bringing a better quality of life to the individuals he served.
Finding that he had not only a desire, but a real talent for advocacy, he transitioned to his position as Executive Director of NAMI- Greater Milwaukee. Peter positively impacted the lives of those with mental illness, their families, and the mental health community.
Peter's last place of employment was Brewhouse Inn and Suites, where he rediscovered a talent for cooking and food service. He would be happy if Bratchos and Shiitake on a shingle made it onto the Brewhouse menu.
Peter was a musician, singer, song writer, tinkerer, thrifter, orator, historian, mushroom hunter/farmer, and would host the annual "boys behaving badly" weekend. He loved traveling, especially to Jamaica.
Peter was hilarious, brilliant, silly, empathetic, caring, and had more friends than Facebook. He was a tremendous friend.
Peter loved and was loved. He laughed and laughed. Peter leaves his family and friends with memories of great stories, lessons, impressions and laughter.
Peter was preceded in death by his father, George (fire breathing legend) and his sister, Katie.
Peter is survived by his mother, Peggy; his amazing sons: Jack (Mother, Nancy Hoeffel) and Oliver (Mother, Amy Schmutte); brother Paul, sisters: Patty and Susan (Tony) Greene; and partner, Jenny Flatt.
A Celebration of Gathering will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, Receptions, 340 S Monroe Ave Green Bay. A time for sharing memories will begin at 3:00 p.m.
