Norval John Smits, DePere, age 90, died Wednesday, August 14th, 2013. The son of Theodore Sr. and Lucy (McDaniel) Smits was born March 7th, 1923, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin.
He was married to the love of his life, Elizabeth Jane Daul of Freedom on June 28th, 1949.
A veteran of WWII, Mr. Smits served 3 years with the US Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946. He served as a member of the Troop Carrier Command, Technical Training Command, Air Transport Command and the 7th Air Force in the Pacific Theater.
After his military service, Norval attended the University of Oklahoma and graduated from Lawrence University with a Bachelor of Science degree. He taught mathematics and science at Weyauwega and Kewaunee high schools. After being awarded a National Science Foundation Grant he obtained his Masters Degree from the University of Minnesota. He also pursued post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster Pennsylvania.
From 1958 to 1985 he taught mathematics at Green Bay East High School. He was a member of NEA, WEA, and GBEA educational associations. He enjoyed working summers for the Wisconsin State Highway Commission as an inspector of bridge construction.
During his retirement he became an adjunct professor at the University of Wisconsin Green Bay.
His recreational pursuits included sailing, motorcycling and flying. He served as a member of the Civil Aviation Patrol and was an active member of the EAA.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth "Betty"; sons, Dr. Michael (Susan) Appleton, WI; Patrick (Jodi) Sister Bay, WI; daughter, Mary (Gregory) Larsen, De Pere, WI; grandchildren: Sarah, Jennifer and Alexander Larsen, Jesse, and Shannon Smits; brother, Floyd Smits, Kaukauna; sister, Dorothy Rebitz Atlanta, GA; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Calaway and Rose Daul; and brother-in-law, Matthew (Mary Ann) Daul.
He was preceded in death by his son, Sean Smits; brothers, Theodore, Gerald, and Kenneth; and sisters, Angeline, Loretta, and Beatrice.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 20, 2013, from 5:00pm until 6:30pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 130 St. Matthews St. Green Bay. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the church on Tuesday at 6:30pm with Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating.
