Nanette Little, 73, of De Pere, passed away June 20, 2017 with members of her church family at her side.
She was born Nancy Meredith Little on Sept. 16, 1943 in Evanston, Ill., the only child of Spencer and Betty (Derrick) Little. Her father died when Nan was in grade school. Her mother later remarried, to Earl Manheimer. The family lived in Green Bay and Nan graduated from East H.S. in 1961, attending college in Wisconsin before setting out for the Big Apple and further studies and work in the fashion industry. Nan spoke often of the excitement of New York City and her involvement in public relations for fabled design houses Givenchy and Valentino. A petite 5-feet tall, she also did occasional modeling shoots (see photo) for young women's apparel.
It was in NYC that she found her calling in ministry, generously volunteering at historic St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church on Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. She received a parish outreach award from St. Bart's for her work with youth, the city's poor and the sick including early victims of the AIDS epidemic. She studied for ordained ministry and, late in life, received a degree from the School of Theology in Sewanee, Tenn. When in the mid-1990s she was summoned home to Green Bay to care for her ailing mother, she continued her church work through St. Anne's parish and the Episcopal Diocese of Fond du Lac. She also worked as a caregiver for the elderly and Alzheimer's sufferers.
Nan's great passions in life were her faith, art and fashion, the city of New York, the Green Bay Packers and a series of house cats capped by her beloved 14-year-old tortoiseshell, Snickers, who charmed the excellent 4th floor medical staff by visiting loyally at Nan's side during her final days in hospice at Bellin. Nan is survived by a favorite cousin and godson, Jim Schlueter of California, and his family.
Friends may gather at 10:00 am on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 347 Libal St., De Pere, before the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in the parish chapel. Her friend, visiting pastor the Rev. Jim Conradt, will officiate. Ashes will be interred at Woodlawn Cemetery, Allouez. Newcomer Funeral Home is assisting.
