Mary Lou Vanden Avond, age 87, of Bellevue, passed away Monday, December 27, 2021 at Allouez Parkside Village. She was born November 8, 1934 in Green Bay, daughter of the late John and Dorothy (Lurquin) Beno.
Mary Lou married Donald Vanden Avond at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, September 26, 1953. They shared 64 years of marriage before Don passed away in 2018.
Mary Lou was a talented dancer as a young woman, traveling to competitions and performing in recitals. She went on to become an instructor and was able to pass on her love of dance to others and encouraged the girls in her family to take dance classes. One of her greatest passions was her kennel, where she enjoyed breeding her Great Pyrenees and attending dog shows around the country, eventually becoming an AKC judge. She was also a gifted musician and loved to play the piano. Mary Lou and Don loved to travel and had many adventures together, especially trips to Mackinac Island and Door County. Family members knew they could count on Mary Lou to help them through difficult times. Mary Lou was a strong woman, loving mother of 14 children, proud grandmother and great-grandmother.
Survivors include her 13 children: Terry (Chuck) Vandenlangenberg, Jean (Jim) Collins, Vicki (Terry) Rentmeester, Carol (Dave) DeGrave, Sue (Jeff) Stone, Scott (Heidi), Mark (Becky), Don (Debbie), Dan (Jaci), and Richard (Melani) VandenAvond, Jennifer (Randy) VanLanen, Janelle (Tom) Prosser and Ellen (Dave Osborn) VandenAvond; 34 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Tom Beno and a brother-in-law, Robert (Betty) Vanden Avond.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Vanden Avond, a son, Jack Vanden Avond and a granddaughter, Gina Rentmeester.
Visitation will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 3425 Willow Road, Green Bay, Monday, January 3, 2022 from 9 to 11 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM with Fr. Patrick Beno, celebrant. Entombment will be at Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.
