Mary J. Emmel, age 72, of Green Bay, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017, after fighting a courageous battle against lung cancer.
She was born May 11, 1945, on Drummond Island, MI, where she was raised by her grandmother, Mary Makinen.
Mary graduated from DeTour High School, earned her LPN degree from Northern Michigan University, graduating in 1964. She worked as an LPN at St. Vincent Hospital, Paddington Station, and Grancare Nursing Home. She also worked at Howe School as a teacher's aid.
She married James Emmel on August 19, 1967, at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They spent their first two and half years of marriage in Two Rivers, where Jim got his first teaching job. They moved back to Green Bay in June of 1970, where they remained and raised their family. Mary volunteered for many years at the Bellin Heart Center. In her spare time, she took care of the house and her family, and did a fair amount of gardening. Mary was always available for her friends and family, and always had an open door policy for all who visited. For the last few years, Mary took care of her son Matt's dog, Oscar.
Survivors include her husband of fifty years, Jim; two sons, Eric and Matthew; granddaughters, Carly & Allison Emmel; sisters-in-law, Waltraut Betchart and Christine Emmel; many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by grandmother, Mary Makinen, aunt Elsie Winimaki, and other Michigan relatives; brothers-in-law, Robert Emmel, John Emmel, Gus Emmel, Jack Erdmann; sisters-in-law, Mavis Emmel, Patricia Emmel, Marie Emmel, and Esther Erdmann.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 14, 2017, at St. Mary of the Angels, 645 S. Irwin Ave., Green Bay. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4:00 pm on Thursday. Entombment will be at Allouez Catholic Mausoleum.
