Marilu L. Barman, 75, of Green Bay, Wisconsin passed away on March 27, 2017. Marilu was born in Iron Mountain, Michigan on August 6, 1941 to the late Floyd and Mary La Liberté. Lu graduated from Kingsford High School where she composed the school song. She was an excellent musician, especially on the piano. She turned down a four year scholarship to Julliard School of Music, and instead enrolled at Michigan State in East Lansing. There she double majored in Theater and English. She continued with her music while at Michigan State and was honored to perform a duet with Van Cliburn while there. Lu also gave piano lessons to students at Michigan State and arranged music for Stan Kenton's orchestra. Lu was also a member of Mensa, the organization of geniuses. After graduating in 1963, she went to Green Bay West High School where she taught English, worked with plays, and helped the students compose the yearbook.
In 1964, she met Philip Barman, a University of Wisconsin graduate. It was instant chemistry between Big Ten enemies, and they became engaged. That summer she toured Europe with a girlfriend before marrying Phil on Thanksgiving Day at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay that same year.
Both were teaching in Green Bay when in the summer of 1965 Phil received a scholarship to the University of Wisconsin- Oshkosh to pursue a Master's degree. Lu taught English at Winneconne that year until Phil completed his studies. They returned to Green Bay in 1966 with Lu teaching special education at Southwest High School and Phil teaching at Preble High School.
In 1967, the couple welcomed a darling boy, Michael. Lu stayed home and now taught out of her own home. She had babysat for the Mitchell family when she was in high school, so she knew a thing or two about raising children. Two years later, Phil and Marilu would welcome a beautiful daughter, Susan, as well.
During the summer, Phil taught swimming at the Allouez Pool, and the kids virtually lived there. Marilu also was a great designer, drawing up plans for remodeling and furniture. She and Phil built unique pieces for their home. When the children got older, Lu spent many years teaching piano to students in her home and to those who were homebound. One semester she taught eleven different subjects.
Both Phil and Lu retired from teaching in 1997. Marilu had helped found the Allouez Village Band in which she was also a member, playing clarinet and bells for 35 years. Phil and Lu traveled extensively, going to Europe seven times and traveling to 37 states. The two traveled to England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, France, Austria, the Tyrol, Germany, Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, and Canada. They were planning a trip to Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg prior to her death.
Marilu and Phil were inseparable. They enjoyed going to movies together because Marilu loved movies and movie stars. She knew them and could list their names, the awards they received and their family histories. She would never miss the Academy Awards. She also was a whiz at playing Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
Lu is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 52 years, Philip; a beloved son and daughter: Michael (Louisa) Barman and their children Waylon and Juliana; Susan (Kent) Vinger and their children Courtney, Corin and Carsyn; two great-grandsons, Elijah and Dominik; a sister, Susan (Charlie) Giese; a niece and nephew: Staci (Wayne) Bennett and their children: Matthew, Katherine, Christopher, and Anthony; Matthew (Stephanie) Giese and their children Morgan, Zachary and Maya; in-laws, Charles (Natalie) Barman; two nieces: Tania (Dan) Basta, and their children: Liam and Callum; Stephanie (Jefferson) Weber.
Lu was preceded in death by her father-in-law and mother-in-law, in addition to many cousins, aunts, and uncles.
The Barman family would like to thank the Brown County Police Department, Allouez Rescue Squad, Ronald Cody of the Brown County Medical Examiner's Office and Newcomer Funeral Home for all their patience and help during this difficult time.
A private family celebration of Marilu's life will be held in the near future.
