Leona Clara Nier

November 19, 1921 — August 2, 2019

Leona Clara Nier, of Green Bay, died August 2, 2019 at the age of 97.
She was born in her grandmother's house to the late George N. Greene and Clara M. (Schwartz) Greene on November 19, 1921 in Howard, WI. Leona attended Champeau (grade) School in Howard (then known as Duck Creek) and graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1942.
She married her childhood sweetheart, Norbert E. Nier, on January 12, 1946, following Norbert's return from serving overseas during World War II. They moved to Milwaukee, WI for one year so that Norbert could complete his machinist apprenticeship. She and Norbert returned to Green Bay in 1949, where they built their home on a piece of the farm property she grew up on. They later built their retirement home on a neighboring parcel located on Nier Court. Leona was a long-time resident of Howard, living on property originally owned by her family for 94 years of her life. Leona worked as a jewelry sales clerk at Prange's Company in downtown Green Bay from 1965-1985 and retired in 1985.

As a mother, Leona was very active in Cub Scouts Pack 113 of Howard as a den mother. She always had ingenious projects for her cub scouts to accomplish. She was presented a Trail Blazers Award with Honors from the Scout Pack 113 in the Village of Howard for her outstanding efforts as a den mother. Leona was a skilled gardener. Her family benefited not only from the fresh produce, but from all the of fruits and vegetables that she canned. Her needle work was exceptional. She loved to embroider, crochet, sew, repair dolls, and craft.
Surviving Leona are her husband, Norbert and their two sons and daughter-in-laws, Terry (Karen Koenig) Nier and Gary (Karen Wagnitz) Nier; four grandchildren, Kathy (Chris) Krueger, Sheri (Josh) Gaertig , Michael Nier and Bobbie Joe (Nick) Martin; eight great grand children Katie, Nick, Noel, Brandon, Garrett, Joshua, Emma, and Aiden; and three great-great grandchildren, Riley, Chamie and Bella, all of Green Bay. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Clarabelle Greene, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents George N. Greene and Clara M. (Schwartz) Greene, her step-father Elmer Christanson, in-laws Pearl and Alex Nier, brother Melvin Greene, sister Deloroes (Greene) Sampo, her brother-in-law Vernon Sampo, her brother-in-law Alex Nier, Jr. and wife Betty, a great-great grandchild, nephew Bernard Sampo, and many neighbors and friends.

Entombment will be at Ft. Howard Mausoleum. The family is planning a private burial service. Gary and Terry and their wives wish to thank their many friends and family members for their encouragement and support.
