John Henry Harsh ("Johnny") was born on December 19, 1948 in Kansas City, MO. In his early years, Johnny helped his father with the family restaurant called "Johnny's Lunch" in Kansas City. The restaurant became very famous and a landmark in Kansas City. After graduating from high school in 1967, he enrolled at Central Methodist College. Johnny joined the Navy in 1968. After his father was killed, Johnny received an honorable discharge from the Navy and returned home to manage the family restaurant.
Johnny's mother, Virginia Harsh, was a praying woman, and she prayed over her children and read the Bible to them, even in infancy. Her prayer for Johnny was to raise him to walk with God and serve Him. This came to fruition when Johnny joined the Salvation Army in 1995 and pastored churches in Blue Springs, MO, Arkansas City, KS, Manhattan, KS, and Oshkosh, WI. Major Ross Zarfas from the Salvation Army has been his mentor since 1994. Johnny pastored Salvation Army Churches for 14 years. In December 2008, Johnny's late wife of 24 years passed away.
In 2009, Johnny married Cia. Johnny was Cia's EVERYTHING MAN!! That same year, Johnny started driving Coach buses and later changed to school bus driving for First Student and Lamers. The children adored him.
Johnny was a great, kind, and gentle man, and he always thought of others first. His family and dear friends will miss his smiles, his jokes, his laughter, his prayers, and his mini-sermons on Facebook.
Johnny showed us all Jesus. He told people that "with a small mustard seed of hope that we can move mountains," and he passed out mustard seeds to many people to remind them of this. He taught us the following things: to see the world through the eyes of a child, to have a child-like faith, to forgive, to find a loving, spiritual church home and get involved, that your words are powerful, to read the Bible and pray daily, to talk to God who is your friend, your shepherd, and your DADDY, and to pray without ceasing.
He was married to Cia for almost 11 years. He is survived by his wife; his sister, Ginger Harsh Callahan; his children, John Harsh, Mark Harsh, Felix Harsh, Lisa Harsh, and Yoley Harsh; and two "bonus" children as he called them, Christina Starner and Nicholas Bokas. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two nephews, one niece, and many close friends.
He is preceded in death by: his brother Steve Harsh, his mother Virginia Harsh, his father John Henry Harsh, and his late wife Yalanda Harsh.
On December 7, 2019, Johnny passed away unexpectedly. God said "It is finished. Well done, thy good and faithful servant!"
