John D. Gibbons, age 85, of Allouez, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 6, 2021 with his wife of 63 years, Jane, at his side. John was born November 19, 1935 in Antigo, WI to the late Edgar Gibbons and Jenny (Benson) Gibbons. John attended St. Hyacinth Grade School in Antigo and was a graduate of Antigo High School, Class of 1953.
During grade school and high school, John worked at his father's drug store. Early in his career, he worked for Western Union Telegraph. John then worked as a Traffic Manager and Radio Announcer for WHBY Radio, Appleton, WI from 1954-1955. John continued his career as Traffic Manager for 47 years at WBAY TV in Green Bay, WI from 1955 until retirement in 2002. John also worked part-time at WBAY, WGEE and WTAQ as a Board Operator and Announcer from 1955- 2007. John married Janet "Janie" Riedl, June 29, 1957 at St. Mary's Church in Appleton. The couple shared 63 loving years of marriage together and were blessed with 3 children.
John was a very active member of the community, serving over 40 years on the Board of Directors for 1st Security Credit Union as well as on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Credit Union League and State Central Credit Union. He also served as President of the Brown County Chapter of Credit Unions. He volunteered countless hours of his time at the Salvation Army and the Men's Closet clothing store. John was the proud recipient of the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Salvation Army in 2008. In later years, he and his wife, Jane, loved to travel, especially to Las Vegas, Hawaii and many cruises. He was an avid mall-walker and worked out daily at the YMCA. John was a hard-working, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
John is survived by his wife, Jane; his children: Kathleen (Dave) Berg, John T. (Peggy) Gibbons and Jim (Julie) Gibbons; grandchildren: Leah (Jason) Kaltenberg and Erin (Dan) Gruenewald, Christopher, Stephanie (Barry Ohlsson) Gibbons and Jayme Valentine; great-grandchildren: Brianna, Emma, Jaxon and Logan Kaltenberg, Grace Gruenewald, Landon and Penelope Ohlsson and Teagan Crummy. He is further survived by his sister, Mary (Bob) Draeger, nieces, Claire Draeger, Kelly (Tracy) Lark and great-niece and nephew, Emma & Aaron.
