Our beloved husband, father, papa, son, friend, and neighbor is at rest after a lifetime of giving to us his whole heart and his unconditional love. Jeffrey Charles Kuehl of Kewaunee, age 68, passed away on July 17, 2021.
Jeff married his best friend, Renée, and together they built a beautiful home for their four children, always providing for them a magical and unbending love. That same love extended to his three beautiful grandchildren. Whether he was wrapping us in bear hugs, picking up morning doughnuts, spending afternoons in the backyard pool, checking our oil, or simply cheering us on, he always found ways to show us that we were his world. Above all else, Jeff's life was guided by his deep commitment to his family.
After graduating from Kewaunee High School in 1971, Jeff enjoyed the camaraderie of playing on numerous basketball teams, forging many lifelong friendships. He found a similar brotherhood while working for the Kewaunee County Highway Department. Jeff took immense pride in paving and plowing the roads of the county, giving nearly 40 years of service to his hometown community. As a third-generation owner of Kuehl Oil Company, Jeff traveled those same county roads delivering fuel to local homes and farms.
His hometown connection extended into the waters of Lake Michigan, where Jeff found a source of peace and refreshment. He spent his entire life on the lake and from Door County to downtown Chicago, always jumped at an opportunity to "take a quick dip," regardless of the water temperature. His love of the beach was passed on to his children and grandchildren, and they will always feel a deep connection to him there. He was our navigator, our lighthouse, and our safe harbor. Many will remember Jeff's infamous sweeper jump shot on the basketball court, his perfectly grilled hamburgers, or his love of Billy Joel songs. But all have been touched by his genuine kindness, his welcoming smile, and his gentle demeanor. He had an open mind that allowed him to connect with anyone, from any walk of life, and he showed respect for all, especially the underdog.
Jeff was a devoted husband to his wife, Renée; a proud dad to Shannon Kuehl (Tracy), Rachel Kuehl (Tom Balsley), Megan Kuehl (Elliott Magers), and Valerie Kuehl (Richard O'Brien); and a loving papa to Molly & Sam Kuehl and Maddie Balsley. He is also survived by his father, Carl "Cully" Kuehl; brother, Scott Kuehl; mother-in-law, Joan Du Chateau; siblings-in-law, Cynthia (Larry) Schaefer, Michelle Du Chateau (Gary Ledvina), Denise Du Chateau (Joe Baierl), Lew Du Chateau (Tammy), J.J. Du Chateau (Karen), Lance Du Chateau (Swapna), and Jeremy Du Chateau (Kelly); nieces and nephews; and cherished family friend, Jesse Rouse.
Jeff was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Kuehl; his sister, Laurie Kuehl; and his father-in-law, John Du Chateau.
All are welcome to join us for a casual gathering to celebrate Jeff's life on Wednesday, August 4 between 4:00 and 7:00pm at Lakehaven Hall in Kewaunee. Out of concern for immunocompromised individuals and young children, face masks are required indoors.
