James (Jim) Dalton Martin, 74, of DePere, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on February 18, surrounded by his loving family. He was born and raised in Keshena, Wisconsin to Wesley and Elizabeth "Libby" (DeCoteau) Martin, on March 30, 1948. He was the youngest of their eight surviving children. Jim married his high school sweetheart, Georgianna Marie Walter, on December 20, 1966. They were married for 49 years before her passing in 2016.
Jim graduated from Shawano High School and, later, the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. Jim was a veteran of the Vietnam War and honorably served in the United States Army from 1966-1969. Jim also was a proud member of the Oneida AmVets group, and participated in many of their events.
A lifelong believer in the power of education, Jim encouraged his children to do well in school and to pursue higher education, no matter their chosen discipline. But more importantly, Jim believed travel was the best education and hit the road at every opportunity. He never saw a historical marker he didn't like, and frequently annoyed his children with stops to read roadside markers on his way to anywhere. No matter if it was a classic road trip with his family or weekend getaway with Georgianna, Jim made the most of the unique opportunities every new place afforded.
Jim is survived by his children Aurene (Steve Clark) Martin, Bridgit Martin, James "Sonny"
Martin, Kenneth Martin, Sarah Martin, Jamie Agard-Martin, and Jenna Corn; daughter-in-law Tanya Lopez-Martin; grandchildren William Couture, Wade and Katie Waukau, Sonny "Alex" and Jaycob Martin, and David and Joshua Clark, Saunders, Syanne, Sena and Sophia Young Bird, Anthony Corn, Robert, Rylee and Allie Jo LaTender; great-granddaughter Mila Kay Young Bird; siblings: brother Wesley Martin, Jr., sister Muriel Bzdawka; sisters-in-law Patsy Cordts, Beverly Martin, and Betsy Martin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Jim is preceded in death by both parents Wes and Libby Martin, his beloved wife and soulmate Georgianna, grandson Roland "RJ" Couture, sisters and brothers in-law Joyce and Roger Peters, Delores and Al Wilke, Lois "Chantel" and Robert Johnson, Darlene and John Spantikow, brothers Harry Martin and Guy Allen Martin, and brothers in-law Daryl Bzdawka and George Walter.
At Jim's request, there will be no ceremony or celebration of life. His family asks that you simply remember Jim as he was, always ready with a story and a laugh.
