Obituary for James “Jim” A. Caelwaerts (June 7, 1935 - April 14, 2024)
James “Jim” A. Caelwaerts, a beloved husband, father, friend, and lifelong resident of Green Bay passed away on April 14, 2024, after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born on June 7, 1935, to Margaret (Streckenbach) and John Caelwaerts. Jim graduated from Green Bay East High School, Class of 1953 and married Elaine Hansen on October 17th, 1959.
Jim proudly served in the Army and later embarked on a fulfilling career in the automotive industry. His dedication and hard work spanned most of his life. After retirement, he continued to contribute by working as a driver for Broadway and formed lasting friendships with the team at Village Greens.
A man of many passions, Jim loved the great outdoors. He was an avid camper, a devoted member of the Bay Sammers Camping Club, and enjoyed hunting in Popple River. His golf clubs and bowling ball were never far from reach.
Jim had a unique sense of humor. He was known for being a bit of a smart aleck and was affectionately nicknamed “Miserable.” His way of showing endearment was unconventional-whether it was tugging your ears or playfully putting you in a gentle chokehold.
Family was everything to Jim. He leaves behind his loving wife, and their four children: Leanne Burch, John (Cathy) Caelwaerts, Joe (Lynn) Caelwaerts, and Laurie (Dennis) Butz. His legacy extends to eight grandchildren, Randi Lea (Tom) Oelke, Daniel (Andrea) Burch, Samantha Jo Burch, Mike (Mariely) Caelwaerts, Matt Caelwaerts, Jake (Ali) Caelwaerts, Nick (Sarah) Caelwaerts and Allison (Kholten) Eggler and ten great-grandchildren, Rylea, Charlotte, Myles, Sadie, Wyatt, Chase, Brooks, Madi, Sophie and Maverick with two more on the way. And is also survived by his loving sister Mary Dickinson.
Jim was proceeded in death by his parents and stepfather Antone Uphill, infant brother William, and siblings Virginia (John) Miller, Doris (Roger) Boockmeier, and Tom (Loanne) Caelwaerts. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Dennis Dickinson.
In his final years, Jim took on a new role-helping raise “Bella,” his daughter’s Golden Retriever pup. Bella, now four years old, brought joy and companionship during his courageous fight against cancer.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the compassionate staff at Emerald Bay and Unity Hospice for their unwavering care and support during Jim’s final stages of life.
