Gregory Scott John, 72, of De Pere, passed away unexpectedly on December 10, 2024, surrounded by family and loved ones, at University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison. He was born on June 19, 1952, to Irving and Leona (Bowman) John in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Gregory was very proud to be both Oneida and Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican. Gregory took time to ensure his family tree was on record with both sovereign Nations over the course of the last several years. He loved to share stories about his childhood growing up in Oneida, the Stockbridge-Munsee Community, and Milwaukee. He enjoyed going for drives through the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Community and reminiscing about his ancestors and family events.
Gregory enlisted in the United States Army as a young man. He was honorably discharged and was very proud of his service to our country.
Gregory was a handsome man known for his big round brown happy eyes, long eyelashes, amazing and welcoming smile. He was a very hip and stylish man. He had great taste in fashion and interior design. He was always dressed to impress no matter where he was going.
Gregory had a naturally kind heart and good spirit about him. He was a Happy-Go-Lucky and easy to get along with kind of guy. He loved to laugh and make others laugh too. He was a wonderful, kind, caring, compassionate, and empathetic man. He was very thoughtful, helpful, and generous in many ways. He was a really good listener, sympathetic, forgiving and loving. He was always honest, encouraging and supportive. He was a great friend!
No matter what happened in life, Gregory always had a positive outlook. In the midst of difficulties, Gregory’s strong mind and strong will carried him forward each day.
Gregory always enjoyed an adventure. His adventurous spirit took him to many wonderful places, where he enjoyed gainful employment, tried new things, met new people, and made new friends. In Gregory’s younger days, he traveled and enjoyed life in various parts of the United States working in the customer service and hospitality industries. Gregory eventually returned to Milwaukee where he enjoyed working in the Security Department of the Forest County Potawatomi Casino. As time went by Gregory decided to move home to Oneida where he worked in various positions for the Oneida Casino until her retired. After retiring, Gregory enjoyed his spontaneous and adventurous travels. He would often call and say, “Guess where I am?” and laugh just hard. And with all his life’s adventures came the wonderful stories that he loved to share.
Gregory loved to travel, conversate, cook, celebrate, go fishing, spend time with his family, and watch the Green Bay Packer games. He was pretty savvy with his tablet, phone, and TV technology. Because of this he did not want a regular television. He wanted an 80-Inch Roku Smart Tv to watch all of his law enforcement and crime division channels, true crime documentaries, and his favorite Start Tv line up. More importantly, he wanted it for his favorite day of the week “Haunting Wednesdays”, where he spent the whole day watching past and present supernatural horror documentaries. He enjoyed listening to all the genres of music but loved to jam to the old-time country and rock-n-roll on his surround sound system while he cooked and cleaned.
Family was very important to Gregory. He was very proud of the fact that he was one of twenty-one children. He loved his mother, father, and siblings dearly. He often shared stories about his upbringing, childhood, and the many great adventures he had over the years with his sisters and brothers.
