Gertrude M. Massey, 88, went to be with her Savior on Thursday, October 31, 2013, surrounded by her family.
She was born on September 30, 1925, in Chicago, IL, to the late Harry & Leona Campbell. Gertrude was taken in as family and later adopted by Burton & Evelyn Vickery of Suamico, WI.
She attended Marinette Normal Teacher's College and received her teaching certificate. She furthered her education by receiving her Bachelors of Science degree in education from UW Oshkosh. Throughout her career she taught at Woodview, Denmark, White Pine, Howard Town Hall, Babcock, Valley View, Cormier, and Pioneer Schools.
After a short courtship, Gertrude married Lloyd H. Massey of Suamico on December 29, 1948. He entered into Heaven on November 16, 1992.
In 1991, Gertrude went with a mission group to Guatemala to build a school for those less fortunate. In addition to her formal teaching, she held numerous bible studies, taught Sunday School and held vacation bible schools for children in her home. She had a passion for teaching and sharing God's word.
Gertrude enjoyed praying for others, swimming, writing, journaling and reading God's Word. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with and caring for her family and friends. She had a laugh and a smile that warmed many hearts.
She is survived by her children, Terrance L. Massey of Rhinelander and Rebekah A. (David) Coopman of Suamico; grandchildren, Christy (Eric) Liebe, Betsy (Aaron) Hoff, and Karter Massey; great grandchildren, Bailee, Mason, Claire, Morgan and Norah; siblings, George L. Vickery, Ann (Al) Anderson, and Lou (George) Molesworth; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her grandchild, Angela Coopman in 1976.
Friends may call from 2:00pm until 4:00pm on Sunday, November 3, 2013, at Living Hope Church, 1840 W. Mason St., Green Bay. A funeral service will be held at 4:00pm on Sunday at the church with Pastor Don Olson officiating.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.
