Gereon "Jerry" E. Rhodes, age 81, of Green Bay, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, October 24, 2018. He was born January 29, 1937 in Iron Mountain, MI.
Jerry graduated from Iron Mountain High School, where he was a talented free-style ski-jumper on Pine Mountain. After graduation, Jerry enlisted in the US Air Force and proudly served his country during the Korean War. Gereon married Emily VanEgeren, March 12, 1963 in Green Bay and spent 55 loving years as husband and wife and were blessed with 2 children. Jerry spent most of his career as a supervisor for Green Bay Metropolitan Sewage District. He also was a bus driver with Jel-Co. During his retirement he had several part time positions including janitor at Maloney's Pub (his son's pub), News Chronicle paper route and guest services at Canterbury Tails Pet Resort (his daughter's business). Jerry's personality and spunk was so enjoyed by the customers at Canterbury Tails and he was integral in the success of the business.
While raising his young family, Jerry cherished times at the cottage in Amberg, WI. Jerry was a social butterfly and enjoyed food and sports at family gatherings. His greatest joy and light of his life was his grandson, Vinny. Jerry loved caring for his best bud, Vinny since birth. He had a patient, caring heart and a love for his canine companions, Hemi and Charlie. He was an amazing father, grandfather, husband. His family feels truly blessed to have had him in their lives.
Gereon is survived by his wife, Emily; his daughter, Lynn (Dezy) Hajos; 2 grandchildren, Vinny and Rylee Hajos; 2 brothers, James (the late Sharon) and Ron Rhodes; 3 nephews: Rob, Todd and Jeff and their families and his beloved pets, Hemi and Charlie.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gereon "J.P." Rhodes, his parents and a sister, Marleen.
Visitation will be held at Newcomer-Green Bay Chapel (340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay), Monday, October 29, 2018 from 4 to 6:30 PM. A prayer service will conclude the visiting hours at 6:30 PM. Visitation will continue at St. Matthew Parish (130 St. Matthews St., Green Bay ), Tuesday, October 30, 2018 from 10 to 11 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM with Fr. Robert Kabat, celebrant and full military honors.
