Gerald C. "Gerry" Panten, 81, Green Bay, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 14, 2014. He was born September 8, 1932, at home in Hartford, WI to the late Alvin and Marie (Lepien) Panten. Gerry graduated with the Hartford HS class of 1950. Baseball was a large part of Gerry's life. He was a lifelong Cubs fan and also played on the 1948 and 1949 State Championship Baseball Teams at Hartford.
Gerry proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1950 until 1955. He served on the USS Kearsarge as an Aerographer's Mate (weather forecaster). Gerry then attended the University of Oregon in 1958. He met his future wife and best friend, Betty Rogne, in De Pere, in 1959. They married November 26, 1960, at St. John Lutheran Church, De Pere.
Gerry was employed with the U.S. Postal Service in Green Bay for over thirty years delivering mail to many folks that considered him family. Gerry retired, but was unable to sit still. He worked a few years for the Brown County Park System and later as a janitor at AMS and at United Health Care until his passing. Gerry made friends easily and accepted all with a big beautiful smile.
He is survived by his wife, Betty and what he considered his "greatest achievements", his three children, Charles A. (significant other, Sandy), Max D. (significant other, Kristen), and Maggie M. (Kevin) Johnson. Gerry is further survived by his grandchildren, Emily, Jacob, and Hannah Panten, and Sophie Johnson; his-in-laws, Robert (Kathy) Rogne, Ilo Reese, and Ronald (Laura) Rogne; and other relatives and friends.
Gerry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale (Grace) Panten; and special cousins and friends, Ira (Francine) Miller and Jean Vaessen.
Family and friends may gather on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at St. John Lutheran Church, 1700 Lost Dauphin Rd., De Pere, from 3:00pm until 4:45pm. A funeral service will be celebrated at the church on Saturday at 5:00pm. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Hartford, WI.
Gerry's family would like to extend a special thank you to the Green Bay Rescue Squad and to the Bellin Emergency Room Team.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the St. John Organ Fund.
