Frieda Turos

February 1, 1928 — March 17, 2024

IN LOVING MEMORY
Of
Frieda (Hertlein) Turos
“OMA”
February 1, 1928 – March 17, 2024
“Fur immer in Frieden”

It is with much sadness that we announce that Frieda Turos 96, of Green Bay, Wisconsin passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and family on March 17, 2024.
Frieda was born on February 1st, 1928, in Bad Windsheim, Bavaria Germany to Margarete (Babette) Hertlein and Heinrich Heinlein. She married Leslie (Laszlo) Turos of Hungary on July 9th, 1955, in Bad Windsheim, Germany, after completing his tour in the United States Armed Services.
Frieda, as a first-generation immigrant arrived in the United States with her husband and five children in tow on October 29th, 1963. She has been a resident of Green Bay since that time.
With the assistance of Grace Lutheran Church she and her family settled into their new life in Green Bay, trying to overcome the challenges to assimilate. She was a loving mother, wife, and “Oma” (grandmother), devoting herself to taking care of her family, not only raising her own children but helping raise some of her grandchildren.
In her limited free time she attended Northeast Wisconsin Technical College for two years attending classes to learn English and clerical/administrative studies.
Her first job was at Schweiger Drug Store, where she became known and loved by all her customers who frequented there for lunch from the Courthouse across the street ……. judges and lawyers all knew “Frieda” with her funny German accent and bubbly personality. She had a way of growing on you. When Schweiger’s closed she continued working part-time at various local businesses and eating establishments. These included Kapps Restaurant, Herlich’s and the YWCA where she had an extensive tenure as a receptionist well into her senior years. She loved being around children, so this was the perfect job for her. She always said, “They keep me young”.
Frieda was a “night owl” and avid reader, staying up late many nights to immerse herself in a favorite book. She enjoyed all kinds of music and loved to dance and sing, everything from opera to Tom Jones.
Her favorite holidays were Christmas and German Mardi Gras or Fasching.
She brought laughter and joy to everyone she knew and could be downright funny with some of the best one liners you ever heard.
Frieda is survived by her five children Barbara Turos-Hubbard; Kalman (Mary Van Straten) Turos; Laszlo (Cathy Vargas) Turos; Dezso (Novalea “Nova” Elliott) Turos; Esther (Dan Moran) Turos. Her seven grandchildren Dale (Kelsey) Bennett; Elizabeth (Brandon) Kussow; Trace (Kristin) Hubbard; Brandon (Marissa) Turos; Hannah (Keith) Vanderpool); Tru M Hubbard and Jesse K Turos; her six great-grandchildren and her sister Linda Hempel living in Frankfurt Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leslie on 1/14/2014, her older brother Hans and sister Luise and younger sister Annelore.
A celebration of life will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 321 South Madison Street, Green Bay, Wisconsin 54301 on Saturday March 23rd, 2024. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a Memorial Service at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be served at the church following the service.
Frieda’s final resting place will be beside her beloved husband at Shrine of the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
The family would like thank Dr. Williams and his staff. We would also like to thank the staff at Caraton Commons in De Pere, Wisconsin for their love, compassion, and exceptional care.
