Dr. Frederick G. Sehring, 81, Green Bay, passed away peacefully Friday, October 26, 2012. He was born January 3, 1931, in Joliet, IL, to the late Fred G. and Edna Mae (French) Sehring. Fred was valedictorian of his class at Joliet Catholic High School in 1949. He graduated with honors from Loras College in Dubuque, IA and then went to Marquette University School of Medicine, from which he received his medical doctorate in 1956. He completed his internship at the University Hospitals of the State University of Iowa in 1957, after which he took three years of residency post graduate training in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University. Fred proudly served his country in the United States Air Force Medical Corps where he was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Schilling Air Force Base. On November 6, 1958, Fred married Kathleen (Kay) Murray. They had five children together before she passed on May 3, 1979. On March 26, 1982 he married Grace and they went on to share 31 wonderful years together.
Fred's professional life was notable for many accomplishments. He came to Green Bay in 1962 joining the West Side Clinic. He was one of the first Ob/Gyns to practice in Northeastern Wisconsin. Fred provided medical care to many thousands of women in the area. He became very involved in the Pro-life movement in the early 1970's. This involvement continued throughout the rest of his career and into retirement in 2001. He most recently was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Power of Life organization in recognition of these efforts. He was instrumental in establishing the St. Vincent Hospital Regional Perinatal Center in the mid-1970's. He served on many professional boards—notably, as President of the Brown County Medical Society in 1973. He also served in many medical leadership positions in all of the Green Bay hospitals. Fred served on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists from 1988-1996. In 1982, Fred established a solo Ob/Gyn practice--Gynecologic Surgery and Obstetrical Consulting. In 1989, his eldest son Stephen joined him in practice. They worked closely together until Fred's retirement in 2001.
Fred impacted so many people during his 40 year career as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist in Green Bay. He delivered many thousands of babies, but never took this privilege for granted. He was never one to boast of his accomplishments, but when pressed, admitted to being proud of the work he did in helping to establish the Regional Perinatal Center. In doing so, he helped to improve the lives of many premature infants and their families. He will be remembered for his great compassion for others and his gift of empathy.
His great grandfather founded the Fred G. Sehring Brewing Company of Joliet, IL in 1868. It operated until the early 1900's. Fred took great pride in his family Brewing heritage. He spent many enjoyable hours researching the history of the brewery and passing on his knowledge to the rest of the family.
Fred was a 50-year member of Oneida Golf and Country Club. Many Thursday afternoons were spent on the lovely links of Oneida. His one golfing regret is that he never had a hole-in-one.
Fred was a compassionate physician, a loving father, and friend to many. He always enjoyed talking to former patients when they crossed paths in the community.
Survivors include his loving and dedicated wife, Grace; seven children: Dr. Stephen (Amy) Sehring, Susan (Patrick) Sheehy, John (Heather) Sehring, Mary White, Peter (Anne) White, Jeffrey Sehring and Dr. Gregory Sehring; and seven grandchildren: Reagan, Jacqueline, Fritz, Ian, Jack, Declan and Caeden.
