Donald "Don" H. Nighorn, age 81, of Pulaski, passed away Thursday, February 16, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 9, 1935 in Green Bay, son of the late Henry and Anna (Magley) Nighorn and was a 1952 graduate of Luxemburg High School.
Don married Judy Cook, May 17, 1958 and together they shared 58 loving years of marriage.
Don enlisted in the US Army in 1957 and served his country honorably for 6 months and called back into active duty in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis. After his military service, Don went home to his family farm where he converted from dairy farming into hog farming and was awarded the Outstanding Young Farmer Award. He was a board member of the Wisconsin Feeder Pig Marketing Co-op. Don transitioned into the animal nutrition industry and was an innovator in the application of the science of animal nutrition to practical use on farms. He was a co-founder of Nutrition Service Company where he developed the Ruma-Rich line of pre-mixes and helped develop computer ration-balancing software.
Don was passionate about his work and truly enjoyed working with fellow farmers in helping to realize their potential. He also took great pride in working with kids through the 4-H program.
Don was an avid gardener and was an active member of the Gardeners Club of Green Bay. He also enjoyed fishing, especially his fishing trips to Canada. Don was a man of great faith and was a member of First United Presbyterian Church of De Pere. First and foremost, Don was a loving husband and proud father, grandpa and great-grandpa. Time spent with his family was most precious to him.
Don is survived by his wife, Judy; 3 sons: Wayne (Debbie) Nighorn, Alan (Evonne Marietta) Nighorn and Brian (Diane and her children, Joe and Angela) Nighorn; 2 grandchildren, Amy (Mike) Lemberger and Joel (Anna Nowakowski and her children, David and Faith) Nighorn; 2 great-granddaughters, Tiana and Jasmine; brothers-in-law, Gerhardt Dahlke and Bill (Joan) Cook; sisters-in-law, Martha (Glen) Harvey and Mary (Dick) Runge; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marian and 3 brothers: Marvin, Wilmer and Merlin Nighorn.
Visitation will be held at FIRST UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (605 N. Webster, Ave., De Pere), Monday, February 20, 2017 from 11 AM to 1:45 PM. A funeral service will follow at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials directed to the Green Bay Botanical Gardens or Unity Hospice in Don's name are appreciated.
