Delores Huston was born August 26, 1925 to Lloyd and Barbara Hawkins into a devout Catholic family on Milwaukee's north side. She was their first child. When Delores was 16, her mother died suddenly of a heart defect at age 34. Delores dropped out of high school and took on the task of raising her siblings and taking care of her dad. She had 2 brothers, Lloyd, age 12, always known as Junior, and Bob, age 9 months. She also had 2 sisters. Nancy was 4 and Mary Alice just a toddler. It was as if her mother's unexpected death created an instant family for her.
This was 1942. There was a war on, and a lingering worldwide depression. The family struggled. With only one wage earner in the family, money was tighter than most of us could imagine. Somehow she did it.
Delores met the love of her life, BillyJo Huston, sometime in the late '40's. He was in the Coast Guard at the time, stationed at Great Lakes Station in Illinois. Delores was visiting a friend who was dating one of BillyJo's buddies. That was the connection.
They married in 1950. They lived in a 2 story flat, otherwise referred to as a duplex. Her dad, Lloyd, lived upstairs, and she lived downstairs.
Delores raised her younger siblings and had 2 boys of her own, Roger, born in 1952, and Richard born in 1954. Eventually her home consisted of only her husband and sons. The family moved around a bit, but eventually bought a home on Jeffrey Lane on Milwaukee's far west side. They moved there in 1959, with their 2 sons. Delores worked at a few different places. The latest was at Sage Nursing Home, in Milwaukee, as the secretary to one of the two owners.
The family moved to Colgate, WI a year after Richard graduated from High School. She and "William" lived there until their retirement in 1986. They moved to Ashwaubenon, WI to be closer to their son Rick and their 2 grandsons, Chad and Todd. Roger was living in the Washington DC area at the time with mom's only granddaughter Kerry. Due to the distance, mom only got to see Kerry on an annual or semi annual basis. It wasn't practical for her to personally attend her many childhood triumphs, but she tried to stay as close to her emotionally as she could.
She got to watch and be involved in her grandsons' growing up. She loved to attend their many activities, including bowling, little league baseball, soccer, and band. She lived to see 2 great grandchildren, Braeden and Tyler, sons of Chad. She also had a great grandson Sam, son of Kerry. Sam lives in England, and unfortunately she never got to meet him.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 19th from 11:30am to 1:30 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S. Monroe Ave. Green Bay, WI. A Funeral Service will follow at 1:30pm in the Funeral Home. Entombment will be in Allouez Chapel Mausoleum. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Cottonwood Manor and Southern Care Hospice.
