Dale Francis Mommaerts passed away on Feburary 18 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the age of 90. He was born on May 1, 1933 in Green Bay, Wisconsin to the late Lawrence and Romaine (Tonnon) Mommaerts. After graduating from West High School in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Dale was sent to Alameda, Caifornia on a train for boot camp (he turned 19 years old on the train). After boot camp, Dale graduated from Radioman’s, Aviation Electronicman and Aviation Electricnsmate school. He was honorably discharged as an Aviation Electronicsman from the USCG on April 27, 1960 after spending 4 years active duty and 4 years in the reserves. The majority of Dale’s enlistment was spent at the USCG Air Detachment on Kodiak Island in Alaska. Dale’s responsibilities in flight were operating the radio, radar, loran and drift meter equipment, as well as a navigator. His on base duties were maintaining all electrical and electronic equipment on the amphibious aircraft assigned to the station. He was a crew member on many search and rescue missions as well as flights patrolling on the International Date Line during the Korean War.
Dale and his fiance, Marilyn VanCampenhout eloped to Dubique, Iowa and were married on August 5, 1957. They were then married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Green Bay on August 24, 1957 by Father Diny. They welcomed two sons into their family. Paul Francis in 1967 and Peter John in 1969. Their daughter Mary Lee, left the family to be with the other Angels in heaven.
Dale started his career at Wisconsin Public Service Corporation on August 12, 1957 and retired May 1, 1993 from the Electric Distribution Engineering Department as an Electric Metering Coordinator. He attended University of Wisconsin Madison and University of Wisconsin Green Bay, successfully completing all of the requirements of the Supervisory Development program offered by the Business and Management Department. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion.
Dale was active in various churches in the Green Bay and White Lake areas. He served as President of the St. Jude Holy Name Society, on the Green Bay Diocese, Catholic Committee on Scouting, as an AD ALTARE DEI and PARVULI DEI consolour, lector, eucharistic minister, CCD facilitator, and on numerous parish committees. Dale and Marilyn volunteered as eucharistic ministers at several nursing homes and to the home bound.
After retirement, Dale and Marilyn did a lot of traveling. Cruises to the Western, Eastern and Southern Caribbean were one of their favorite destinations. They also enjoyed their frequent trips to Europe, Hawaii, Mexico, Alaska and the western United States. They became Green Bay Packer season ticket holders in 1957 and went to many out of town games. They were also Wisconsin Badger football fans and had season tickets for many years.
Dale enjoyed hunting, fishing, music, boating, cribbage, an occasional trip to the casino, spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed wood-working, feeding and watching birds, refinishing old furniture, rummage sales and had a large garden. They donated a lot of vegetables and fruit to Paul’s Pantry. He and Marilyn loved attending Paul’s band performances or DJ jobs. They also enjoyed Peter’s football and basketball games including the many athletic camps he attended. If the grandchildren had a game, concert, etc. they attended. They attended all of Eric and Adam’s football and basketball games and all of Abigail’s softball, basketball and soccer games, as well as her band concerts. They also enjoyed their special time with the great-grandchildren. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were very important to them and were loved dearly.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn Jean, and two sons Paul (Julie) and Peter (Tracey). Three grandchildren Eric (Jessie), Adam (Emily) and Abigail (Nicholas). Two step-grandchildren Brock (Lily) and Bayli (Zac). Four great-grandchildren Roman, JJ, Ari and Emmy. One sister Nona and one sister in-law Mary Jane.
Dale was proceeded in death by many loved family members.
Friends and family may visit at Sts. Edwards and Isadore, 3667 Flintville Rd, Suamico, WI 54313; on Friday, February 23, 2024 from 9:00 am until 11:00 am with Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 am with Father David Hoffman officiating. Military Honors will be after the service. Private internment will take place at Fort Howard Memorial Park.
