Constance Anne (Coorlim) La Luzerne passed away early Sunday morning, November 23, 2014. She lived a long life – even longer than she expected! She was born October 29, 1922 in Chicago at St. Joseph's Hospital to Anthony and Olive (Vieth) Coorlim. She was a child of the Great Depression which showed in her penchant for saving, recycling, and reusing things. Much of her childhood was spent fending off her impish younger brother that continued throughout their lives. She graduated from Nicholas Senn High School and Chicago Teachers College. She held various positions in Chicago and Washington, D.C., including working as a mathematician for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. One story says, as related by their cousin Bill Neverman, that she took a shine to John La Luzerne when she met him at a family function and felt sorry because he was injured. In 1951 she married John at St. Jerome's in Rogers Park, Chicago. They moved around several locations in Green Bay before settling at their South Quincy Street home to raise their six children.
She was an intelligent woman, always seen doing her crossword puzzles and relishing a game of Scrabble with her kids – the wear patterns on the family dining room table testifies to this dedication. While sometimes critical, she always encouraged education and appreciated the arts. She also had her quirks and absent-mindedness, like the time we drove off after she left her purse on top of the car on one of our numerous trips to Peninsula State Park, or her infamous sauerkraut cookies. She enjoyed trips taken to Florida, basking in the sun while Dad basked in the shade.
She is survived by her children Sue, Paul (Jane Hansen), Ann (Dave) Vandenack, Ellen (Mik Clayton), Tony (Dawn White), George (Val Rosen), brother Spiro (Carol Brennan) Coorlim, and many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Robert, her husband John, brothers- and sisters-in-law Bernard (Bernice) La Luzerne, Mildred (August) Mazza, and Richard La Luzerne.
You will be missed. We'll keep the Scrabble games going.
Thanks to the staff and residents at Allouez Parkside Village and Heartland Hospice for their care of mom during her time there.
