Cecilia M. Coleman died on December 10th, 2016 at age 94. Cecilia was born on September 18, 1922 in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of Cecilia (née Gannon) and Edward Maguire. The family moved to Larchmont, New York when Cecilia was 12 and she graduated from St. Augustine Grammar School and from St. Gabriel's High School, New Rochelle, NY (1940), the College of New Rochelle (1944) and received her Master's Degree in Medical Social Work from Fordham University, Bronx, NY. In 1950 Cecilia met the love of her life, Arthur L. Coleman, Jr. M.D., a radiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. On their first date they stepped into a Catholic Church near the hospital where they lit a candle together and Cecilia silently prayed that he might be the one. They were married on May 26, 1951 at St. Augustine Church in Larchmont.
During the Korean War Dr. Coleman was stationed with the US Army Medical Corps in Sendai, Japan where their first two children, Arthur and David, were born. From 1954 to 1955 Dr. Coleman did his residency at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology in St. Louis, MO and Cecilia had their next two children, Edward and Mary Cecilia. In 1955 they moved to 88 Park Avenue, Larchmont, NY and between 1956 and 1960 twins Peter and Paul, and Gerard and Eugene were born. They were active members of St. Augustine's parish and Larchmont Yacht Club for 30 years. In 1977 they moved to 24 Beard Avenue in Buffalo, NY for Dr. Coleman's radiology practice at the Sisters of Charity Hospital and later moved to Top of Sunrise Road in Olean, NY for a similar opportunity at the Olean Medical Clinic. Cecilia is fondly remembered for "Grandma's Camp" where she invited the grandchildren for a week of fun-filled activities. Work and family took Cecilia and Art to Asia, Europe and South America. They loved their travel adventures together. They had been married for 45 happy years when Dr. Coleman died in 1996. Dr. and Mrs. Coleman valued their faith in God as paramount and they loved their family as no other. The Coleman family camped, hiked, sailed, swam and skied together and the kitchen table was the center of so many wonderful memories for Cecilia. She especially enjoyed being with her family no matter the location. Cecilia was proud of her Irish Catholic heritage and taught with loving respect those cherished traditions to her children and grandchildren.
In her later years, she lived with her children in their respective homes. Most recently, Cecilia resided in Green Bay, WI with her son Edward and his family and at Astor Terrace Rehab. Cecilia was predeceased by her husband, her son David (Daryl), her sisters Mary Teresa and Mary Elizabeth, and her brothers Eugene and Edward. Cecilia is survived by her children Arthur of Larchmont, Edward (Ana) of Tulsa, OK, Mary Cecilia (James) of Rye, NY, Peter and Paul of Bridgeport, CT, Gerard (Cheryl) of Galveston, TX and Eugene of Montauk, NY. She will be greatly missed by 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
