Carmen Mathy, beloved Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, died peacefully Friday, March 11, 2016 with her family at her side. She was born on April 27, 1923 to Vittorio and Palmera (Bertoldi) Chiesa in Norway, Michigan. Carmen and her sister, Leala, lived with their brother Tulio and sister-in-law, Kate Chiesa after their parents passed away. Carmen graduated from Kingsford High School in 1940 when she was 16 years old. After graduation, Carmen and her sister, Leala Knudson, moved to Door County where she met and later married Wallace (Buddy) Mathy on June 23, 1943 in Namur, WI.
Carmen was blessed to have five generations in her family. She devoted her life in the care of her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time at her cottage at Little Sturgeon for over 60 years with Buddy, family members, and neighbors, who became like family to her. She always had an extra plate for anyone who stopped by during meal time. The beautiful garden she kept up was admired by people passing by. For 25 years, Carmen and her sister, Leala, volunteered through the Red Cross at St. Vincent's Hospital. Carmen also helped prepare meals for funerals held at St. John's. Carmen and Leala, who passed away in July 2015, spent many of their days together. Life will never be the same without both of them.
