Carl Ray Dycus, 79, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2013, after battling Alzheimer's. He was born on September 29, 1933, to the late Martin and Zelma Dycus, in Sparta, Tennessee.
As a young boy, Carl developed an incredible work ethic, while working the farm fields, alongside his father. He graduated from White County High School in 1951. With limited employment opportunities, Carl left his small hometown for the big city of Milwaukee. A short time later, he met his soon-to-be-bride, Genevieve Mary Soulier. While dressed in cowgirl apparel, she apparently had caught his eye, while exiting a grocery store. He was so taken in by her that he went up and introduced himself. Her feelings were mutual and they married on February 27, 1954, surrounded by loved ones.
They began their family a short time later with the birth of their first-born son, Dennis. They faced the first ultimate test of their love, when Denny died at age 6, after a two year battle with Leukemia. Altogether, they were blessed with six children, nine grandchildren and became great-grandparents on Christmas Eve, 2010.
Carl was employed in those early years by Universal Atlas Cement. He was promoted to Superintendent and transferred to the Green Bay plant in the early 1960's. He worked there for many years, until the plant closed. After that he joined Kellogg (Associated) Bank, as the Maintenance Supervisor, until retiring in 1996.
Carl was an avid bowler and golfer, even achieving a 300 game and a Hole-in-One. He enjoyed this special time with his golfing and bowling buddies until Alzheimer's made it impossible for him to continue.
Carl and his family faced the challenges of Alzheimer's together. From the surrendering of his car keys, to the surrendering of his personal care, Carl found comfort in being in the presence of his "Sweet Genevieve". She cared for him with amazing strength and grace. Their love endured literally to the end, as she kissed him goodbye as he breathed his last breath.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dennis Ray; daughter, Theresa Schultz; brother, John Dycus; and brother-in-law, Jimmy Jenkins.
Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Genevieve; children: Cheryl, Gerald, and Dale (Lori) Dycus, and Lisah (Dan) VanderHeiden; son-in-law, William Schultz; grandchildren: Zachary (Nicole) Schultz, Amanda (special friend, Adam) Schultz, Corey, Jordan, and Logan Dycus, Cade, Nathan, and Ryker VanderHeiden, and Emerson Dycus; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Brayden Schultz; sisters: Mary Jenkins, Milwaukee; Ann (Bobby) Pittman, Midway, KY; and Willa Dean (Skipper) Gibson, Gallitin, TN; aunts, Zora Thompson and Irene Dycus both of Sparta, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends may call Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Newcomer Funeral Home, 340 S. Monroe Ave., Green Bay, from 3:00pm until the time of service at 6:00pm with Chaplain Ron Urmanski officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, De Pere.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Carl's memory.
We wish to extend a deep and sincere thank you to all the Angels at Alpha Senior Concepts and Hospice Advantage for shepherding our family and Carl through this most difficult time.
