Beverly left us on September 16, 2024 to dance and sing in heaven.
She was born Beverly Kay Hinkel on July 19, 1943 in Waterloo, Iowa to Russell and Maxine (Foster) Hinkel. Her father was killed in WWII and later Maxine married Carl Reisner. Bev graduated from Cedar Falls High School and met her husband at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. They were married August 7, 1965 in Cedar Falls. They recently celebrated their 59 year anniversary.
Bev graduated from Wartburg College with a degree in Social Work. She started teaching Special Education in the Green Bay school system. She began working part-time at Curative Workshop after her daughter, Dawn, was born. She later went full-time in the Life Skills program at Curative. She retired in 2008.
She was active with the youth program at Grace Lutheran Church, sang in the choir and enjoyed many bible studies over the years. She became active in Lutheran Lay Renewal, traveling around Wisconsin and other states to share more about her faith with others. She also sponsored several children in Haiti and Dominican Republic through Compassion and World Vision.
She enjoyed helping her husband with musicals at Ashwaubenon High School by being the head of makeup. She loved going to performances at the Weidner, Daddy D’s and Cup of Joy. She participated in the Lifelong Learning program and belonged to several card groups. She enjoyed making her own cards for loved ones and special occasions. But most often you would find her at the movie theater enjoying just about any type of movie except horror.
She loved spending time at the family lake house in Minocqua, appreciating God’s creation. She enjoyed hosting friends and relatives there over the years and any time she could spend on the water, whether waterskiing or just riding in a boat.
Bev will always be remembered as compassionate and outgoing. She possessed a remarkable spirit, characterized by her innate ability to forge connections with others. No matter where she found herself, she could easily strike up a conversation with anyone, from a stranger in line at the grocery store to a longtime friend at a local café. This gift not only demonstrated her natural charisma, but also served as a testament to her deep-rooted empathy and kindness.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Reisner; her father, Russell Hinkel; and stepfather, Carl Reisner. She is survived by husband, David Shalkhauser; brother, Terry (Barb) Reisner; daughter, Dawn (Bill) Engelking; son, Scott (Angela) Shalkhauser; grandchildren: Kristin and Erik Engelking and Ethan and Nathan Shalkhauser.
