Bernard J. "Bernie" Gigot, 95, Green Bay, passed away on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, joining his beloved wife in eternal peace.
He was born on May 17, 1919, in Denmark, WI, to Gustave & Sara Marie (Mignon) Gigot.
Bernie graduated from Denmark High School and later from UW Madison with a degree in Pharmacy.
He enlisted into the U.S. Navy during World War II and commanded a landing ship infantry. Bernie reached the rank of Captain, and was honorably discharged in 1944.
Bernie married the love of his life, Joan Gigot, on October 12, 1944, in Merrill, WI. She passed away on July 6, 2014.
He was a pharmaceutical representative for the Upjohn Company for 36 years. Following retirement, Bernie worked at various pharmacies around the Green Bay area as a substitute pharmacist.
Bernie was a member of Oneida Golf & Riding Club for 57 years and headed many committees while a member. He was an accomplished piano player who was a founding member of the amateur group, "Last of the Big Bands," made up of Green Bay amateur musicians who conducted an annual dance for hundreds of friends at the Riverside Ballroom.
He was a member of St. Matthew Parish and served as an usher for over thirty years.
Bernie was among many veterans who took the trip of a lifetime on the Old Glory Honor Flight in April 2012.
He loved spending time with his family and close friends, playing golf and was an avid Packer fan.
Survivors include 4 children, Richard (Jude) Gigot, Virginia (Mike) Reitzner, Gary Gigot (special friend, Tammy Jenkins), and Sara Joyce (special friend, Gary Garcia); 7 grandchildren, Nicole (Craig) Schneider, Jason Gigot, Tyler (fiancé, Bethany Otuteye) Reitzner, Jessica (Dean) Luce, Emily Gigot, Erin (Matt) Koeck and Kyle (fiancé, Melissa Hilger) Joyce; great-grand-children, Matthew and Jakob Schneider, Logan Reitzner, Maxwell Gigot, Emmett Koeck, and David Hudson Joyce.
He is preceded in death by his wife; and son-in-law, David Joyce.
Family and friends may call Monday, October 6, 2014, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 130 St. Matthew St., Green Bay, from 9:30am until 10:30am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Monday at the church with Rev. Philip Dinh-Van-Thiep officiating, followed by military honors. Burial will be at All Saints Catholic Cemetery, Denmark.
Bernie's family would like to the staff at Rennes Nursing Home and Renaissance, and special thanks to Doris, for her years of loving care for Bernie and Joan.
