R. Allen "Al" Gokey, age 79, of Allouez, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at St. Vincent Hospital, with his loving wife at his side. He was born September 22, 1938 in Suamico, son of the late Ralph and Josephine (Kalfas) Gokey.
Al graduated from Green Bay West High School. Al married Marilyn Vanden Heuvel, September 26, 1959 in Green Bay and together they shared 58 loving years of marriage and were blessed with 4 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. He worked for Fort Howard for 26 years and later he and his wife owned a silk floral shop in De Pere and Door County. The remainder of his career, he did promotional work for resorts, retiring at the age of 60. Al was a man of strong faith and a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish, De Pere. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus and the Lion's Club.
Al enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking and traveling. Al's handiwork included many pieces that his family will treasure for a lifetime. He worked hard to provide wonderful experiences for his family that allowed them to travel extensively throughout the country, as well as to other continents. He was an involved father who was integral in bringing youth hockey to Brown County and was awarded "Man of the Year" for his efforts. Al earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received a letter from President Eisenhower for his marksmanship with the Scouts. He became a Boy Scout leader for Bay Lake Council. He also enjoyed playing cards and cheering on the Packers.
Al is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his 4 children: Carrie (William) Stempski, Lynn (Michael) Jadin, Mark Gokey and Allen Gokey; grandchildren: Jacqueline and Joseph, Matthew, Samuel, Daniel and Adam, Chris, Alana, Maria and Julia; 2 great-grandchildren; his brother, Richard (Kathy) Gokey; brother-in-law, Richard Marto; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Rita Marto and granddaughter, Anna Bella Gokey.
Visitation will be held at St. Francis Xavier Parish (220 S. Michigan St., De Pere), Monday, April 16, 2018 from 9 to 11 AM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 AM with Fr. Richard Getchel, celebrant. Entombment will be in Allouez Catholic Cemetery & Chapel Mausoleum.
